New England Revolution 5-2 Minnesota United

New England thrashed Minnesota at the Gillette Stadium to claim their first win of the new season. Two goals from John Aguedelo and strikes from Kei Kamara, Lee Nguyen and Chris Tierney secured the three points for Revolution. Collen Warner and Bret Kallman responded for Minnesota but they slumped to their fourth consecutive defeat.

New England got off to a fast start and scored within four minutes, Tierney whipped in a cross that was met by Aguelo who made no mistake with a powerful header. It could’ve been two just six minutes later but Aguelo drilled his shot over the bar.

Minnesota pulled it back level on the 15th minute, a misplaced clearance found its way to Warner who drilled it into the back of the net. The goal came against the run of play but Warner was there to capitalise on sloppy Revolution defending.

The visitors were only level for six minutes, good build up play from Revolution was finished off by Kai Kamara for his first of the season. It was no less than the hosts deserved as they were well in control in the opening twenty minutes.

Revolution were awarded a penalty on the 31st minute as Vadim Denidov brought down Aguedelo to give the visitors a huge chance to extend their lead. Up stepped the captain Nguyen who converted from the spot to give the hosts some breathing space.

They host had four goals just before half time, Diego Fagundez expertly found Aguedelo who doubled his tally for the afternoon. New England were rampant in the first half and took their chances well.

Minnesota pulled a goal back four minutes after half time, after the free kick the ball fell to Bret Kallman who converted from close range. It was merely a consolation for the visitors.

New England restored their three goal lead on the 51st minute with another penalty kick. Fagundez was involved yet again and was brought down in the by Warner. Tierney stepped up and made no mistake to score his first goal of the season.

The scoring finished but the entertainment continued on the pitch with both sides having chances to add more goal. It was the hosts who had most of the chances and continued their dominance.

New England made sure they recorded their first points of the season at their first home game, whilst the wait goes on for Minnesota to record their first win of the season.
