New York Red Bulls 0-0 Real Salt Lake
New York Red Bulls missed a catalogue of chances as they failed to bounce back from last weeks defeat against the Seattle Sounders. Fredrik Gulbrandsen had enough chances to win the game on his own, but Real Salt Lake held on to gain an important point on the road.
The first half was a game of very few chances. Both sides cancelled each other out as the defences dominated proceedings. Fredrik Gulbrandsen had Red Bulls best opportunity, when he fired over the Salt Lake crossbar.
Red Bulls midfielder Tyler Adams then had to clear a chance off the line at the other end moments later. Luis Robles was called into action before the break, when he scooped another Salt Lake attempt off the goal line.
Gulbrandsen arrowed the first chance of the second half wide of the Salt Lake goal, as the Red Bulls went in search of the first goal of the game. Bradley Wright-Phillips was the next to take aim, but he could only guide his header over the bar.
Daniel Royer was presented with arguably the best chance of the game when the ball fell to him on the edge of the box, but hie blasted his effort well over Matt VanOekel’s goal.
By the hour mark it was all New York, as Salt Lake looked happy to try and shut their opponents out and take a point.
Luke Mulholland saw a left footed effort deflected for Real Salt Lake after 61 minutes, as the away side tried to assert their authority on the game for the first time in the second half.
Gulbrandsen then took matters into his own hands, beating three men before curling a left footed shot towards goal, only to see it turned around the post by VanOekel. Gulbrandsen was given a golden chance after 73 minutes, but nodded his free header wide from just eight yards out.
Wright-Phillips turned cleverly in the box after 79 minutes, but could only hit his shot straight at the Real Salt Lake goalkeeper.
