Clint Dempsey’s penalty sent the Seattle Sounders on their way to a comfortable win over the New York Red Bulls at Century Link Field. Sounders’ win takes them to within one of Red Bull’s record MLS regular season victories.
Both teams exchanged possession in the opening 22 minutes, but neither side could muster anything clear cut. The first real chance of the game fell to New York’s Felipe Campanholi, but Seattle’s Swiss keeper, Stefan Frei, was on hand to turn it round the post.
Sounders were given the chance to take the lead from the spot when Jordan Morris was felled by Luis Robles in the Red Bulls goal after 28 minutes.
Veteran striker Dempsey gave the reigning MLS Champions the lead from the resulting penalty.
Fredrik Gulbrandsen saw yellow for simulation in his attempts to earn his side a penalty, as Red Bulls went in search of an immediate response.
Morris and Nicolas Lodeiro both had chances to double Sounders’ lead, but they had to settle for a one goal lead at the interval.
Despite the constant waves of Sounders pressure, Red Bulls were level when Bradley Wright-Phillips got off the mark for the season, by arrowing a header into the top corner.
After good work by Lodeiro and Joevin Jones, Morris finally got his goal with a close range header after 65 minutes.
Sounders extended their lead when Harry Shipp redirected Jones’ strike beyond a helpless Robles.
Despite their best efforts, Red Bulls struggled to find a way past a solid Sounders defence. The game was at risk of boiling over as it went into stoppage time, but Seattle held on for their first win of the MLS season.
