New York City FC 4 – 0 DC United

R. Wallace (8)

D. Villa (28, 75)

M. Morales (39)

David Villa bags a brace as New York City run riot over DC at Yankee Stadium Patrick Vieira’s team cruised past DC United with a comfortable win and a dominating performance. Goals from Rodney Wallace, David Villa and Maximiliano Moralez gave NYCFC the three points they needed to kick start their season after losing their opening game. The scoring started early in the seventh minute after a curling effort from Jack Harrison hit the crossbar, but Wallace immediately converted the rebound, leaving no chance for DC’s Bill Hamid. DC instantly reacted, but with a goal ruled offside. A neat bit of play led to Lloyd Sam putting the ball in the back of the net from five yards, but was flagged up by the linesman. Possession was soon switched around despite the visitor’s attempts. New York took great control of the game for the rest of the second half, doubling their lead in the 27th minute. Again Wallace was involved in the action, with an awkward cross into the centre of the box, which was dealt with ever so majestically by David Villa, whose header glanced in the side netting. It did not take the Citizens long to add another to their tally, after Moralez got himself onto the score sheet in the 39th minute. A cool finish into the bottom right corner after a smart through ball from Villa opened up United’s defence, making it 3-0 just before the break. DC United started the second half strong, with a shot from Patrick Nyarko towards the bottom left forcing a save from Cities Sean Johnson. They carried on piling on the pressure, with Nyarko again causing trouble. Johnson saved a weak shot towards the centre of the goal, with a following cross resulting in another attempt from Nyarko, whose header was saved towards the top right corner. City finished off the game in the 75th minute, with Villa bagging a brace. A quick step over confused DC’s Steve Birnbaum, giving Villa the space to neatly lift the ball past Hamid to make it 4-0 and round off the three points. This win will give New York City FC great confidence going into their next game against Montreal Impact next weekend, whereas DC will be looking for a quick turnaround against Columbus Crew at home. UpTheMLS MOTM – Maximiliano Moralez Our Man of the Match goes to Moralez. To come into this New York City side and fill the boots of Frank Lampard is a big ask, but his performance this game showed exactly why he was asked to do so. He was commanding on the ball, and showed his goal scoring ability with a great finish, as well as creating many chances going forward. All in all a great game for the young Argentinian.
